What is Belote and How to Play It

Belote is a card game that originated in France in the early 20th century. It is derived from another card game called klaberjass, which is popular in many European countries. Belote is also known as baloot in Saudi Arabia, pilotta in Cyprus, and coinche in some regions of France. The Origin and Popularity of Belote

The exact origin of belote is not clear, but it is believed that it was created by adapting the rules of klaberjass to suit the French preferences. The name belote comes from the French word for a pair of a king and a queen of a trump suit, which is one of the special combinations that can be declared in the game. The first official rules of belote were published in 1921, and since then, the game has spread to many other countries and regions.

Belote is popular because it is easy to learn but hard to master. It is a game that combines luck and skill, as well as cooperation and competition. It is a social game that can be played with friends or family, or online with strangers. It is also a game that can be adapted to different preferences and levels of difficulty, as there are many variations of belote, such as coinche, rebelote, contrée, etc.

The Deck and the Teams

Belote is played with a 32-card deck, consisting of the ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, and 7 of each suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades). The cards have different values depending on whether they are part of the trump suit or not. The trump suit is determined by the bidding phase of each round. The highest card in the trump suit is the jack, followed by the 9, ace, 10, king, queen, 8, and 7. The highest card in a non-trump suit is the ace, followed by the 10, king, queen, jack, 9, 8, and 7.

Belote is usually played by four players who form two teams of two partners. The partners sit opposite each other at the table. The goal of each team is to collect as many points as possible by taking tricks and declaring combinations. The first team to reach a target score (usually 501 or 1000) wins the game.

The Dealing and the Bidding

The dealer is chosen randomly for the first round of the game. Then, the dealer rotates counter-clockwise for each subsequent round. The dealer shuffles the deck and lets the player on their right cut it. Then, they deal five cards to each player in two rounds: three cards in the first round and two cards in the second round. The remaining cards are placed face down on the table, forming the stock.

belote compete against other players online

After the deal, the dealer turns over the top card of the stock and places it face up on the table. This card is called the turn-up card, and it determines the potential trump suit for the round. Starting from the player on the dealer's left, each player has the option to accept or pass the turn-up card as the trump suit. If a player accepts, they say "belote" and take the turn-up card into their hand. They must then discard one card from their hand face down on the stock. The bidding phase ends and the gameplay phase begins. If a player passes, they say "pass" and the bidding continues with the next player in counter-clockwise order.

If all four players pass on the turn-up card, the bidding phase continues with a second round. In this round, each player has the option to propose any other suit (except the suit of the turn-up card) as the trump suit, or to pass again. If a player proposes a suit, they say the name of the suit (for example, "hearts") and the bidding phase ends. The gameplay phase begins with that suit as the trump suit. If a player passes, they say "pass" and the bidding continues with the next player in counter-clockwise order.

If all four players pass again in the second round, the round is cancelled and a new round begins with a new deal by the next dealer.

The Gameplay and the Scoring

The gameplay phase consists of eight tricks, each of which is played by four cards (one from each player). The player who accepted or proposed the trump suit leads the first trick by playing any card from their hand. The other players must follow suit if they can, meaning they must play a card of the same suit as the first card played. If they cannot follow suit, they can play any card from their hand. The trick is won by the highest card of the trump suit, or by the highest card of the suit led if no trump card was played. The winner of each trick leads the next trick.

Before playing their first card in a trick, each player can declare a special combination of cards that they have in their hand, such as a belote (a king and a queen of a trump suit), a tierce (three consecutive cards of any suit), a quarte (four consecutive cards of any suit), or a quinte (five consecutive cards of any suit). Each combination has a different value in points, which are added to the team's score at the end of the round. However, only one combination can be declared per team per round, and only if it is higher than any previous combination declared by either team.

At the end of each round, each team counts their points from their tricks and their declarations. The points from tricks are calculated by adding up the values of the cards in the trump suit and the non-trump suits. The points from declarations are calculated by using a table that shows the value of each combination depending on the trump suit. The table is as follows: Combination Value in Trump Suit Value in Non-Trump Suit ----------------------------------------------------------- Belote 20 - Tierce 20 20 Quarte 50 50 Quinte 100 100 The team that accepted or proposed the trump suit is called the taker team, and they must score at least 81 points from tricks to win the round. If they fail to do so, they are said to be dedans (inside) and they lose all their points from tricks and declarations. The other team is called the defender team, and they score their points from tricks and declarations normally. If the taker team scores all the points from tricks (162 points), they are said to have made a capot (slam) and they score an extra 90 points. If either team scores all the points from tricks and declarations (252 points), they are said to have made a générale (general) and they win the game immediately.
