More About Rabindranath Tagore and His Works




Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 7, 1861, in Kolkata, India. He belonged to a wealthy and influential family of Brahmo Samaj, a reformist Hindu movement. He was a prodigy who started writing poems at the age of eight and published his first collection at the age of sixteen. He was also a self-taught musician, painter, and philosopher. He founded Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, a rural town near Kolkata, where he promoted a holistic and progressive education system.


Tagore was a prolific writer who wrote in various genres and languages. He is best known for his poetry, especially Gitanjali (Song Offerings), which won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. He was the first non-European and the first Asian to receive this honor. He also wrote novels, short stories, plays, essays, and songs. Some of his notable works are Gora, Ghare Baire, Chokher Bali, Shesher Kobita, Raktakarabi, and Jana Gana Mana (the national anthem of India).
